Stump Grinding Albury-Wodonga
Below-grade stump grinding across Albury and Wodonga, from a narrow-access walk-behind for tight Lavington backyards to a tracked machine for larger red gum stumps on open blocks.
A stump left in place after removal tends to cause problems over time. The wood holds moisture, attracts termites, throws suckers from the root plate and shifts nearby paving as the roots die back and dry out. In the hot summers around Albury-Wodonga that breakdown can happen faster than you'd expect. Grinding it out in one visit clears all of that. We use two machines depending on the access — a narrow walk-behind for tight Albury backyards and older Wodonga blocks, and a tracked grinder for larger stumps on more open ground.
The price comes off three things: stump diameter at ground level, species, and how far below grade you need it cleared. Most owners across Albury-Wodonga ask for around 200 to 300mm under, which is enough for new turf, paving sand or a shallow garden bed. If you're pouring a concrete slab, installing a tank stand or replanting a large tree in the same spot, we can push deeper — usually 400 to 500mm, sometimes more for deep-tapping species like river red gum.
After grinding you're left with a mix of fine chips, disturbed root fibre and soil in the hole. That fill will settle and slump as the wood breaks down through the warm months, so for anything you care about — turf, paving or new planting — we recommend pulling the chip out and backfilling with topsoil. We can do that as a line item, or you can handle it yourself. Either way the stump is gone.

Stump Grinding FAQs
How deep can the grinder go?
Standard depth is 200 to 300mm below the surface, which handles new turf, garden beds and paving sand. For a concrete slab, a tank base or replanting another tree in the same spot, we can grind to 400 to 500mm, sometimes deeper if the species and root structure allow. Tell us what's going in and we'll match the depth to the job.
Will the grinder fit through a narrow side gate?
If the gap is 900mm or wider, yes. That covers most older Albury homes and the infill blocks around Lavington and West Albury. For anything narrower, or a stump inside an enclosed courtyard, we walk it on the quote visit and either crane the smaller machine in or find another way through.
What's left after grinding?
A mix of wood chip, root fibre and disturbed soil, roughly level with the ground around it. That fill slumps as the wood breaks down in the heat, so for turf or paving we'd suggest pulling the chip and backfilling with screened topsoil. For a garden bed you can leave it, add compost, and let it settle a season before planting anything valuable.
Is it cheaper to do multiple stumps in one visit?
Yes. The mobilisation cost only happens once, so doing several stumps on the same day works out cheaper per stump. Worth combining if you've inherited old removals across the yard, or if there's a run of them along a fence line. Send us a count and rough diameters and we'll quote the lot together.
